Deborah Belaus is an online certified Qigong teacher specializing in the older population. She founded Feel Good Qigong, a culmination of over forty years in the healing arts as a yoga and meditation teacher, massage therapist, and wellness studio owner. Deborah's journey as an older woman in her late sixties opened her to the practice of Qigong. This energy-based protocol
focuses on movements more conducive to helping an older body repair what was damaged and restoring the vitality lost over the years.
LETTING GO TO FEEL THE FLOW
With the seasons turning towards autumn, the trees lose their leaves, growth slows down, and the golden light of summer makes way for a darker time of year. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, a Qigong practice is an elixir for vitality to last you a lifetime. We are designed to flow in cycles and patterns in attunement with nature.
Qigong is an energy-based practice. Energy is the key to self-healing, and it's a natural medicine for the whole self, body, mind, and spirit. As humans, we are the center of this entire energy field. Each season helps us re-pattern our energies to harmonize with each phase and element of the changing weather. We are now in the metal element time of year. Metal is about cutting away. This metaphor means being open to letting go of what does not serve us any longer. In letting go, there is a feeling of grief. Grief affects our lungs, large intestines, and immune system, our suit of armor from pathogens to get in. The lungs protect our hearts. The lungs affect our breathing. So, in a Qigong practice, we connect the dots to help us feel at home with these changes. We start to notice how to coexist with the energy all around us.
All my classes include gentle Qigong movements, breath awareness, guided meditation, an openness to self-awareness, and a deep dive into what each season teaches us. This practice maps the body, mind, spirit, and energy as an interrelated web of interaction and relationships. It relies on the principle that a part can only be explained by looking at the whole.
"Let it Go, and Let it Flow"
Simple seasonal practices are a beautiful way to weave more intention and wellness into your life. We are now in the middle of the Fall season. The transition from the warmer summer months marks the beginning of the yin half of the year's cycle when nature's energy begins to descend and contract. Temperatures fall, leaves drop, and days shorten. For many, this is the most challenging season. This transition to autumn provides more space and more time to breathe. It invites reflection and contemplation. It's a reminder to settle down, but it also can be a time to let go, which can bring a bit of grief. The element that represents this season is Metal. Metal manifests as the essential minerals and trace minerals for our bodies. Metal also cuts away. These metaphors help us recognize ourselves as co-existing with the natural world. The message for this time of year is to let go of the deeper parts of yourself and find all your hidden treasures. It eliminates anything that does not serve you and enables you to do something more positive and new. The two organs we focus on for the Fall are our lungs and large intestines, which are the organs that eliminate waste. So, we reflect on all the aspects of this season and connect the natural dots to self-exploration. How we resonate with Metal qualities will shape how the Element is structured in our physical form.
The movements will focus on keeping our lungs clear and our immune system robust for this change in weather. We will activate, stimulate, circulate, let go, and get to the open flow of our entire body, mind, and energy systems. Letting go becomes the metaphor for growth and stability as we prepare for the winter months ahead.

Debbie Belaus is an online certified Qigong teacher specializing in the older population. She founded Feel Good Qigong, a culmination of over forty years in the healing arts as a yoga and meditation teacher, massage therapist, and wellness studio owner for ten years. Debbie's journey as an older woman in her late sixties opened her to the practice of Qigong. This energy-based protocol focuses on movements more conducive to helping a body repair what was damaged and restoring vitality lost over the years. The practice of Qigong can help you be your best healer as you approach your wisest years. Her classes offer space and comfort, safety and acceptance, and she honors the inevitable changes that come with aging. You will leave feeling energized, inspired, and motivated to age gracefully.
As we say goodbye to the Fall season, we enter the Winter season. This is a period of descent and rest, of going within our homes and ourselves. Like nature and the animal kingdom around us, this time of hibernation is necessary for our tired limbs and burdened minds. Although the winter can be harsh, lonely, and isolating, it can also teach us how to take away the distractions and the buzz and present us with the perfect time to rest and withdraw into a womb-like love.
In Traditional Chinese medicine, winter expresses the water element. Physically, winter qigong practices focus on the organs of the kidneys and the bladder. In your body, the water element mainly affects your kidneys, urinary bladder, fluids, spinal cord, bone marrow, and brain.
During this period, all of nature is in a state of stillness and hibernation. Therefore, it's the best time of year to conserve energy and nourish your qi. Qigong practices for winter emphasize silence and inward reflection, sleeping more extended hours, taking naps, self-massaging, and maintaining internal warmth throughout the organs.
The kidneys are considered the body's energy batteries. They also rule the water element by regulating its distribution and excretion through bodily fluids, urine, and blood.
Because the kidneys are so critical to our vitality in the winter, the qigong classics suggest that we pay extra attention to conserve our energy.
Winter teaches us to become still and awaken the awareness of our senses. Meditation is one of the best practices to attune your energy with the yin energy of winter… then the new year will begin again around the corner. Like a seed planted in the earth, we will all rise with renewed energy again to dance in the sunlight.
Join me as I take you on the winter journey through soothing physical practices and stillness practices that help you reconnect to yourself. Qigong is a complete practice of body, mind, and spirit.
Life is a gift; let us live it well with awareness and grace.
BE LIKE WATER AND FLOW
The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said water is fluid, soft, and yielding. Nothing in the world is as smooth and yielding as water, yet nothing can surpass it for dissolving the rigid and inflexible.
Be like Water is a reminder to find a way of not struggling but flowing.
The wheel of the year has much to teach about managing our energies. In the dark of the winter, all of nature is in a state of stillness and hibernation. Water is the element for winter, so practicing and maintaining internal warmth throughout the organs makes the movements more fluid and comforting. During the winter months, the earth is in a state of hibernation. This winter is the best time of year to conserve your energy and heal, so by spring, you are prepared for more activity and longer days. One of the most beautiful practices for the winter is to attune our energy with meditation. Finding time for quietude and a soft landing will allow your body to remember "wellness" to carry you through the rest of the seasons.
Calmness is essential for our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. It allows us to recharge, think deeply, and connect with ourselves and the world. Incorporating moments of stillness into our daily lives can lead to a more balanced, peaceful, and fulfilling existence.
February Qigong offers us a way - to feel and experience tranquility. We have to move in ways that allow and prepare the body, mind, spirit, and energy to soften all our rough edges, find that deep place of rest, and accept that relaxation is not a punishment but a way of life. It's part of the doing and the non-doing, the yin and the yang.
It's receiving true love from ourselves. So give yourself or a loved one this gift as we continue to Journey Around the Winter Season.
In February, I'll share more resources to support you during this transformation time of year.

"Emerge from the Soil"
Over the next few weeks, nature will transition from winter to spring. With the change of seasons, nature's energy and how we move, feel and think will also change. The Five Element Framework provides an overview of the organs, sensory organs, body tissues, taste, and environmental factors we must consider to adapt quickly and align our energy with a new season.
Every season has a gift to offer, and spring gifts are about growth and rebirth and slowly emerging from winter's hibernation with more energy and vitality. But not too fast; we must emerge slowly from the winter slumber and pay attention to our Liver, gallbladder, and appropriate movements. The energy of winter was down, quiet, and meditative. Spring's energy is outward and germinating new ideas and new growth. Spring will feel refreshing if you practice and embrace winter's message of rest and restoration.
Spring is associated with the Wood Element, which has strength, resilience, and flexibility qualities. The connective tissues (fascia and tendons) related to this element are the body's connective tissues. We know these connective tissues must be muscular and elastic for optimal health. Practicing exercises that strengthen and maintain the elasticity of the tissues becomes a priority during spring.
It's time to start opening our sails and hydrating the riggings to help us set sail this spring season.

ONLINE ZOOM COMMUNITY - BASED QIGONG CLASS
"PLANT SEEDS OF INSPIRATION"
The days are getting longer, and we can see a burst of greenery, hear the birds, smell the flowers, and feel the growing warmth of the sun.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spring is associated with rebirth and growth. Spring is linked to the Wood element and the Liver/Gall Bladder organ network. Our Liver system is responsible for the smooth flow of energy and blood in the body. It governs our nervous system and emotions and is considered one of the women's most essential energy organs.
Following the seasons, energy keeps us fresh, active and engaged in our health. Spring is about growth, expansion, and new perspectives. We emerge from spring soil by stretching our tendons, ligaments, and fascia network, warming up our bodies to prepare for more activity as the summer months begin. Stretching the tendons allows a person ability to increase their strength.
The practice and principles of Qigong connect to our natural resources. An everyday commitment to your health is essential to help repair what you have damaged over the years, restore what you have left, and plant seeds of vitality and longevity.
This Zoom online class is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I limit this class to fifteen students. It is more in-depth teaching and community-based, so I open the course 10 minutes before and after for open dialogue.

"Early Summer Joy"
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, each Season propels us to the next. Early Summer is here, so it's time to start planning more activities in the warmer weather and longer days to play. Suppose we rested enough in the winter and planted seeds of inspiration in the spring. In that case, early summer is about taking inventory of our bodies as we add more outdoor activities. Early Summer is the Fire element that affects the heart and small intestines. Summer is the time to activate your digestive fire and burn off the stored energy from winter. Nature is on your side to safely add more activity for the warmer weather and longer days of sunlight. The extra light brings us joy and helps us feel inspired.
In this early summer session, I teach how to move physically through early summer, the energetic principles of seeing a pattern, and how to cultivate how everything ties in and flows together. The focus will be on the organs of the heart and small intestines and their functions from a Western and Eastern perspective. Qigong is about learning skillful means to map out the development of your body, mind, soul, and energy at every stage and season of your life.
Join me for this new platform I am offering. Each session will last four weeks and be one and a half hours long on Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. EST. I'll begin with an informative discussion focusing on the elements of our particular season, followed by a physical practice to support the two organs of the heart and small intestines. All classes will end with a deep relaxation/meditation. This is a whole-body experience that addresses your full scope of health.
You will also receive a recording of the entire class and a 15-minute recording of a shorter version of the key topic. Both can be practiced to fit your needs and keep your practice active.

"EASE INTO THE SUMMER MONTHS WITH MINDFUL MOVEMENTS"
The Early Summer Zoom program is about finding our baseline, taking inventory of our whole body, mind, and spirit, and discerning what we need to train and self-protect to live the rest of our lives as older adults. Based on that information, you can then initiate a summer program that incorporates more activities. The longer days of sunlight encourage us to spend more time outside. It's a great time of year to build a structure that can help you feel strong, flexible, and inspired.
The beauty of this qigong/tai chi practice is that it offers an all-inclusive, holistic approach to maintaining our lives. It's a natural road map to follow. Each season brings a new message on how to manage our health. Each season propels us to the next, giving us the wind behind the sail to achieve long-lasting health. Much of this practice involves learning how to observe, contemplate, feel, and find balance within your system.
During this four-week session, I will focus on Qigong movements that awaken all your systems, release stagnation and toxins, and promote a sense of well-being. This will allow the flow of energy to revitalize your entire system. From that flow, I transition into Tai Chi movements that enable mindful movement, regulate your nervous system, increase strength and flexibility, and enhance balance, focus, and concentration. The slower tempo of this practice allows for careful attention to posture, alignment, and weight transfer, reducing the risk of injury. I conclude with a ten-minute guided meditation that brings this class to a close, leaving you with a sense of calm and relaxation. This comprehensive self-care routine is designed to promote optimal health and longevity.
You will also receive a recording of the entire class, as well as a 15-minute recording of a shorter version of the key topic. Both can be practiced to fit your needs and keep your practice active.

Qigong for late summer strengthens the Earth element of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The movements support the stomach and spleen, transforming the emotions of worry and anxiety into a sense of centeredness and balance.
The Late Summer season is a time to focus on balance, especially in times of chaos or worry. By staying centered, we can navigate the high energy of the Fire season, Early Summer, without burning out. This emphasis on balance is an important life lesson, reassuring us that we can maintain ease and avoid disease with the right approach.
Each season has a theme, so we create an intention that leads us to a new destination or a new perspective on how we want to live our lives. Each season propels us to the next. Late summer is the fruiting of our lives, and Fall brings us the harvest.
Qigong helps bring order into one's world. Through the practice, one removes what damages one and adds what sustains one. Qigong and Tai Chi are gentle, expansive practices that offer a profound way to access genuine peace and well-being. It helps the body relax while giving the mind something to focus on—a beautiful practice for regulating your nervous system while tapping into the natural flow of life.
Each class will focus on the seasonal movements, organs affected by this season, and inspirational intentions to connect with the nature of late summer. We will practice together as a community and energize ourselves to feel the Joy that late summer brings this time of year.
Qigong is a comprehensive practice that encompasses the body, mind, spirit, and energy.
The Dance of Unity

SEASONAL SUPPORT FOR SELF-CARE
In Chinese Medicine, late summer is the golden harvest season of the abundant earth element. It marks the transition between the summer and fall. It's a time of digestion and grounding. This time of year, we are invited to center ourselves as we get ready for the Fall time, where we take nature's cue, watching the leaves fall and "let go".
We transition from the earth element to the metal element. We transition from the business of the summer to slowing down and enjoying the fruits of our labor.
We prepare for this transition through guided movement practices such as yoga, qigong, tai chi, and meditation, promoting deep rest. These simple but profound seasonal practices are a beautiful way to weave more intention and wellness into self-care for your health care.
I designed this class as an elixir for vitality, stability, and complete balance of body, mind, spirit, and energy.
